Ive never been to a TBG LAN.

But i beleive there should be the follwing services which are usealy seen at LANs.

Web Server - To post news like torurny info
IRC Server - How can you not have this!?!?!?
Forums - To post if you have anything to sell.
FTP Server - Game Patchs and Apps etc, maybe have upload folder for funny vids, flash etc, and any files ppl need to share to all.
DC Hub - For easy file shareing, Direct Connect, the only way to go!

well normally the team has pretty much everything there covered apart from the irc server....normally there isnt much point there.

there isnt a dc hub but there is a nifty program tht peeps use to browse the network for files...

otherwise mate i wouldnt worry these lovely blokes are professionals hehe

Jeez? Whats ur prob ? ;) Do you think i am asking too much, i sure dont. They can be setup in like 30 mins to a hour easy.

Yea i no vale.

And i belevie there is point for IRC at any lan.

And windows file sharing is crap tbqfh. Use a real p2p app like direct connect.

Eg if you have a shared folder on windows and 10 ppl r leeching off you and ur trying to play a game its gonna cause some lag. And the file send speeds of thos 10 people will be slow. You see the uber problems?

With Direct Connect you connect to the hub, share your folders. Browse peoples users list and que files you want. They then have a que of uploads and they send 1 or 2 at a time. Perfect. And when you wanna play a game you just disconnet from the hub. When night time comes you all connect to the hub and let sends go on, when you want to play games again just disconnect from the hub.

Personaly i think you shouldnt be allowed to connect to the network before you disable windows file shareing, like at i-series. It causes un-needed broadcast traffic.

If i was runing the lan i would put a print out on each desk with the key infomation like http, ftp, irc, dc hub addresses.

:O man, read the whole post...

note the :P at the end...j/k!

I agree that windows file sharing it pretty pants though, and I do like teh sound of this direct connect queueing business.
But just remember, being that you haven't been to tBG before don't start critising before you've even arrived, it won't make you any friends! (and might make people pull network cables out etc at the lan :P)
Also I'm sure on the crew will say it but tBG does not support file sharing for illegal material, the only thing being transfer over the network really should be game traffic, patches and none illegal stuff :)

Im not meaning to critisie. Just makeing suggestions. Ive been to many LAN's.

I didnt say anything about ilegal files but ill be happy to run the DC Hub if the staff wont run it on one of their servers and IRC of chorse.

And yes, Direct Connect is like Kazza, but leet!

Sharescan seems to do the job quite dandy..

yer it is THE BIG GAME and not the big share
irc takes away talking to people in person and social side to big game, What i feel is one of best thing about it.
eg. the big game BBQ and quizes
share scan is fine. so going a bit ott, but set one up if you so wish i would like to see how it would go.

Leviathan

how does irc take away talking to people in person ? your still at the lan and can do that and that part of the greatness of LANs. I agree its one of the best things about LANs.

irc has its uses, eg multi ppl can chat at once. you can ask for games on it, paste server addresses, paste links, slap ppl with trouts etc.

what i suggest is just a internal server where everyone sits in #thebiggame

how can u not of used irc at all previous lans?

Here is a little summary for you:

Web Server - To post news like torurny info - Sometimes the intrannet is used for this but generally its just for pizza ordering so no
IRC Server - How can you not have this!?!?!? - Do u have a mouth?
Forums - To post if you have anything to sell. - No, its not a car booty
FTP Server - Game Patchs and Apps etc, maybe have upload folder for funny vids, flash etc, and any files ppl need to share to all. - There is the FTP for getting patches off but its not for filling with crap
DC Hub - For easy file shareing, Direct Connect, the only way to go! - Windows is gay but it has always worked plus sharescan does the job

I must admit i'm with Blackstar on this one

The forums was just a suggestion as us comp ppl often have old hardware to sell.

What if you want to play a game without the lag of your hard drive being raped? You shouldnt have to disable and reenabled windows file shareing everytime, Direct Connect is far better.

tuBBymAN

just disable and re-enable your guest account

While we agree with how useless Windows File Sharing is, this event is about the gaming.

We don't condone file sharing (unless it is legal material) however we don't go out of our way to prevent it.

As for IRC, we have had a server before, and publicised it too....however, people didn't really use it, so we didn't bother for subsequent events.

I'll bring my 1.3tb server if you have a spare connection on the switch - its small (micro atx) so you should be able to cram it somewhere on the stage.

It got everything shared via windows, http and ftp and organised really well. It could host cs, source and a bf2 server but I think that it will proberbly get too battered to do both file sharing and a game server, so I'll proberbly just leave it setup for the former.

I was keen to bring it anyway as it has the install for games we wanted to play as a group, so let me know if its ok!

wow you guys certainly know how to welcome a new guy to the big game.. lol a dc hub would be amazing dont see whats wrong with trying to get everyone to use it .. uses 1 % of your cpu while in use... and i thought sharescan was completely different.. you search for stuff you are looking for ... but filenames aren't always correct etc and sometimes you just want to browse... dc is all that you can browse someones list of what they wanted to share...and then download (1 at a time :) ) but its not my lan so its not up to me :) as for the other things... forums good idea but i dont think anyone has any money now anyway just before chrimbo :p ..
ftp server.. they have one but only game patches and stuff i believe... and anyway spazmochad has nearly every file you want (im not joking)...
irc server - good but tbh i hate the user interface so i wouldn't be using it anyway..
the web server ... they shout (over mic) things out about the tournys ... and they have a projector with info about the tournys ... not sure if thats for just old school games now though :/

anyway cu@lan you leet mofos

Web Server - Intranet is avaliable but its only for general information and pizza ordering
IRC Server - At an 80 person event when we pushed it we had 10clients, 7 of those were crew machines. Havent run one since
Forums - Your on them.
FTP Server - We have one.
DC Hub - The event is not about file sharing, therefore we wont run a hub to encourage this.

We do encourage a less automated event and such we tend to shout out over the mic to communicate. Im sure the features your talking about work at other events but we have developed our own style over the years and find it quite succesful. We are always open to suggestions but I think we have the points you have raised covered.

Anymore constructive suggestions are welcomed.

lolz boswell :D and there is more than one client that the one u have used with the user interface u hate ;p irc ftw!

if you dont encourage file shareing you should get ppl to disable windows file shareing :P

often ive found a notice board thing where anyone can posts messages on the intranet usefull, if some1 wants 2 tell a message or whatevea to all its great to do there. thats my only suggestion i can think of.

and as for irc it just sounds like not many users at TBG use it :) but thats no reason not to have it! eg if some1 needs help from staff first they can ask in irc (we use a !calladmin script to altert admins) and if no1 is about then go find a staff member 2nd.

good idea about irc but tbg its so easy to just go up and talk to the admins... any problems they would have to come over to your pc anyway..

Welcome Leviathan,

Not sure why you rustled up such a hostile response but as Jynx has said this is a tried and tested formula. I think if you give the Game a chance you will understand some of the points raised.

I do like the idea of DC but then sharescan does ok for me and hell so does windows (for this event). It all comes down to not taking the piss and being thoughtfull and it works ok if not we just disable the share or the port no biggy really.

Both the IRC and Intranet have traditionally never been really used. I think it is a shame about the intranet but hell that is the way it is. I personally have always liked the idea of published stats for the tBG servers.

See you at the LAN :)

Leviathan
11-28-2005, 10:38 PM
Thx welshbloke :D

once u have had DC ur never go back tbh, give it a chanch!

also another thing about irc at lans is that u start talkin to somone on irc first, then maybe hav a bit of gaming and then go meet them. ive met quite a few ppl like this at i-series events but then that huge and irc is vitial to the event.

yea stats, irc and for game servers r cool imo :)

thing with intranet, news can be posted there as well as it being called out via mic so ppl can check for n e updates easy etc and keep everyone on track.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tubster's response. TBG thrives on it's sociable atmosphere, hell even if IRC stopped me having to walk around so much I wouldn't use it to organise the tourneys, coz you know what, I like talking to people. As for DC, I used it at Uni a while ago and I can't think of anything I'd want to do on it that I can't do with sharescan (tho it may have more features since I last used it).

Leviathan
11-28-2005, 11:46 PM
dc owns sharescan hands down.

and yea its best to organise the tourneys not over irc.

I had a fresh install with the messenger service still on at a TBG once, and ended up playing 7/10 mins of a 1v1 tourney match with a net send stuck over my cross hair
