No, but I'm afraid I must ask... surely ?2113.82 would be much better spent getting a brand new desktop with an even more hugerific screen than 19"?!

Surely it depends how big your lap is?

Surely it depends how big your lap is? BOP doesn't have a problem with that.

Yes a 19" screen is excessive

Yes a 19" screen is excessiveI think it really depends what you want it for. If its like most laptops and its used for office/home office work then yes it's excessive. However, if the laptop is for, say a Student (who has no other TV) or maybe to play games on (if the person doesn't have room for a full tower set up) or maybe a graphics designer (or something of that ilk) who needs to have a laptop (maybe they go to client sites) then no I don't believe it is excessive.

Novatech at least must think that it isn't and there is a market for it or they simply wouldn't sell it!

I was reading it again, the thing weighs close to 7kg, sans the power adaptor!

We're on tBG forums, it's never going to be a problem :p

Re the laptop, I really value portability over just about anything else on a laptop (that is the point isn't it?) - I should be able to sling it in my bag and go (not go to hospital because it dislocated my shoulder).

Some folks are infatuated with all things mobile and they will buy it although in reality a barebones system would probably be a better bet as they are reasonably mobile and a damn site cheaper (and would work in any student digs). This thing is not really any more mobile that picking up your screen and box. This is like the 50" Plasma in a small room scenario but it will not stop the muppets from splishing the cash didnt stop the muppets buy the plasmas did it.

Personally im just about to buy a new laptop for work. However im going to get a 15.4" screen n a seperate 19" tft. Therefore letting me have 19" if I want or the option for split screen.

This also means it keeps the weight down for using on trains / planes or just having it sitting on my lap. 7KG for a couple of hours must be like having a small child or dog sitting on you...! :s

Yes its excessive, my alienware laptop has a 19.2" screen, once you get beyond a certain size its no longer a laptop, but rather it becomes a moblie workstation.

Judge what you are going to use it for, are you always going to be near power supply? do you plan to watch a LOT of films on it and play games on it? ie: is it to be a moblie workstation? If so, then 19" is fine.

If you arn't really going to watch that many films on it, if you don't plan on playing the latest games, or its a game where fine detail isn't a major issue (MMORPG, RTS, TBS etc) if you mainly plan to use it for chat/inet and other sevices then get a nice tiny laptop, it'll last longer on battey, it'll be less hassle.

Its all down to what you want to do with it.

its a desktop replacement so isnt going to be on the moved alot.. unless you wanted to body build with it.
and for some people a pc is too cluttered ugly ect and something like that is idea when you dont want it u put it away.
but it costs a bomb... u could buy a really nice screen and SFF system for the same sorta money... and it be better in the long run.

but if you are in the market for one of these HUGE laptops do you care about it being not as upgradable? i doubt it as it fits your needs atm and looks very impressive :)

Hmm, un-upgradable laptops are getting less and less the norm now, it used to be taking apart a laptop to upgrade the ram/hardrive/processor was a mammoth task. Now adays it isnt as hard though, the hdds are sata, the ram is under the removable keyboard, and even the graphic processors in the high end alienwares/dells are a plug and play IDE style unit.

maybe a graphics designer (or something of that ilk) who needs to have a laptop

Well they would prob have a mac laptop of some kind and i think even they only go up to 17" screen. That laptop is pointless for all the reasons previously identified in this thread. I see little point for owning a laptop personally as if i go anywhere i'm driving and if i want to use a pc then i sit in front of mine. I mean i will have to have one because of my job but that just means i get given one of these ultra mobile ones and i dont have to pay! :D

About the non upgradability i think Shimmer is probably making the point that as this is a novatech laptop they probably have very little accessible parts for the user. As u say most laptops u can get at the drive and RAM these days but there are still very few they let you at the chip or gfx chip. So considering gfx and processors being some of the most popular upgrades that still makes them fairly un-upgradable.

The sort of people who would be buying this i doubt would even think about removing the keyboard etc.

As for the point about it being a novatech laptop i was generalising as alot of laptops are the same.

LOL tubby,

thing is that the plastic covering can ruin the case if left on there and the laptop is designed to take a few knocks.... ish

Well Dell just pissed all over novatech, a 20.1" LCD screened laptop: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N10205&rbc=N10205&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsftdhpnotebook1

This is quite funny, how practical is using said laptop in London: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/video/0,139101587,49284379,00.htm

that is fooking massive!!!!! although im suprised at just how usable it was on the tube that is propper impressive. What got me is the fact that he was dragging it across the ground and thats like a 2 grand laptop as he said! I think if he tested it for more than 2 mins he may have found it a little heavy to balance on your legs.

BirdofPrey
10-27-2006, 04:32 PM
Lol, he was dragging it accros smooth ground, on and you think it was his? Blatently a Dell freebee.

Who the hell needs a Laptop with that sort of screen?!

BobNT
11-01-2006, 09:04 PM
I looked at those, I dont use the laptop on the move, mainly cos I drive everywhere.

Basically would have replaced my PC at work and allowed me to move files back n forth from home to work without needing to use

a) a USB storage device
b) 2 pcs + 2 monitors etc.

Plus the company paid for everything. Tho in the end was a lil more sensible n went for a Sony Viao :)

SHimmer45

saw a Tosh protege mini notebook i was impressed.
and sony subnote books are sweet to look at.
The Dell X1's are good nice screen and quality keyboard being superseeded by the D420 which is slightly bigger and uses "core" tech and are pretty rapid and have excellent screens

The graphics card on my dell xps 2 laptop just broke (overclocked to 510/1200 for a year), a month out of warrenty. Trying to replace it with a 7800gtx but Dell keep trying to fob me off with a 6800 again :(

Worst time to break it really, so much new technology about, but need about 3 months for the prices to drop and a decent 24" display to come out.

Still debating in my head whether to spend the ?160 on a 6800ultra go replacement to keep me going until then  safe mode with networking is wearing a little thin on things I can do :D
