Does anyone know of a bit of kit (software or hardware) that will stream auto off the net and then duplicate that feed out onto a lan?

My thinking is that rather than having many many people in an organisation having individual streams the organisation has one stream coming into the network and then that is distributed locally.

VLC can broadcast/re-broadcast a stream or a media file.

Or put a server install of OSX (its on OSX install disk, as well as the desktop install) and running quicktime streaming server would work.

Believe it or not but you can set up shoutcast (winamp) to do it too, basically you get shoutcast to stream from its source, and act as a relay, people on the LAN can then connect to your relay - thus saving everyone on the LAN each downloading the stream off the internet! woot.

Has to be a shoutcast server doesn't it?

And yeah, VLC is pretty much made for this

Ah, most likely, but that's free too, haven't looked into it much, just know you can get it to do what you want.

VLC is pretty good and can be run on just about anything but the gui development lags significantly behind the implemented features so you sometimes need to learn to use its command line options which can get fairly complex if you need to use the features that have just been implemented.

If you want to use it as a client the http streaming client is broken (or was last time i tried to use it) :(
