looks nice their daish and that samurize thing is ver flashy i like coolmon coz its just there to tell me whats going on so i don't need it to be flashy takes up less system resources
Erm actually tuBBy coolmon takes far more system resources that any Samurize config, Samurize is a much better, almost next gen, pc monitor.

SlyDave

Samurize connects to the system proformace monitor (hence why its winNT only) Coolmon, calculates all of its numbers :\ Samurize just read them :D also Samurize can be used to monitor remote computers (I use mine to monitor my servers temp/cpu usage and space)
also all the plugins for it are cool, allowing you to read the news, see whats on TV, see if your EverQuest server is online, see if the next megatokyo comic is complete etc. :D
Yeah far easier to work with too in my opion.
Oh here is mine, all the fancy stuff is hand made Samurize configs. The image is due to my hatred of XP ;)

Plus i'm using Webshots to cycle my wallpaper every hour as I found a whole bunch of sweet fantasy style pics by a guy named Luis Royo. I will have to find my favourite one to put in here for you all, and some of them are quite raunchy too :?) *tee hee hee*

tubby - XP Home - Good for most home users
- XP Pro - Pretty good, sorted out an installation (of windows) problem that wk couldn't and hasn't crashed once since i installed it about 2 months ago, so i agree with you there :)http://gosh.ex.ac.uk/~cs02gk/blackstarDesktop.jpg

well jim as they say don't knock it till you tried it your like one of these old men complaining about changes and "when i was a lad" i'm not denying 2k is a great system its just that XP Pro is too its never once crashed on me or ever done anything it shouldn't so i'm quite happy and like G says as long as it works!

so we're coming upto our bandwidth limit for the month, and someone decides to post a 'post your desktop' thread, great :p
lol putty.
XP is just not designed for someone who want to be in control of thier PC thats the bottom line. As it is an evolution of 2k it is very likely less stable. Also I ahve use XP a lot on machines I fix and while it does pick up devices quickly and configure them it also makes it harder for me to troubleshoot and tweak things. XP is designed for your average home user, even Pro, I just find that it clashes with me. To each his own. Anyway I am going to Linux so there :P ;)

lol just try 2 get wine to run all your fav games, its nearly impossible!

XP is perfectly stable if you know what you're doing - the same with any OS. For the most part XP Pro is pretty damn configurable, it does lack in a few areas, notibly proper control over processes, but even that can be overcome.
Linux still has a long way to go before it can even come close to windows in terms of usabilty - some people love getting dirty with the workings of their system but it shouldn't be a neccessity. Try any everyday task in Windows and then in Linux - you can almost guarantee that the Linux way is more complicated every time.
As it is an evolution of 2k it is very likely less stable
Sorry but thats BS, if anything it's likely to be much more solid as it's had the benefit of all the win2k patches as well as the extra development time. This PC has run for over a month without a restart with no crashing and no loss in performance, the only time I turn it off now is if it's keeping me awake at night.

Bascily Windows 2000 is a Workstation OS and Windows 98/ME is the Home OS and NT4 the Server OS
then came along XP Home, XP Became the Home OS, XP Pro the Workstation OS and Windows 2003 the server OS.
XP is designed to replace 2000 but not for another 2 years (check out MS's product life cycle) and personaly I don't like that :| I use XP on some of the machine at work and whilst its smooth, stable and pretty, its a real drain on the under spec machines it has to run on, its also more looks than anything else. XP is a fantastic OS for people that want a computer to "work" and don't care how, XP Pro is the same just with a few of the Server Tools and Managment Suites. 2000 is the power users dream, its all of NT with the functionalitiy of WIN98SE.
I will no doubt upgrade to XP one day, either though a moment of insanity or by force, I whine and moan, but I'll get used to it. Still 2000 is my fav OS by far, stable, fast, plain and simple not fills and no spills.
Speaking of upgrading, I install Office 2k3 last night, whilst the new features are great, the fact you can't change the control design not to be XP's gay tube design does my nut. The most important feature for me is the merdge AddressBook/Outlook Contacts, meaning I can now use my Addrbook usfuly and not have loads of double entires.. I can also sync my phone with it :) and Once I get Exchange up and running and can share it across the network or even access it from work \o/
2003 however, is the DADDY it kicks the living shit out of all other OS's its blindingly fast, simple and hassle free, safe as houses, and has some awsome crash control. and its got all the plug and play of XP, hotswapping, driver caches etc.. but none of XP's fillyness etc, basicly it is an upgrade of 2000 :) but not suited for use as a workstation OS, althought I plan to see if I can gear it that way..
There is no point having a "my OS is better than yours" argument, there is no single best OS, like there is no single best GFX card or CPU, its down to the user and its application, for me 2000 is the best OS for me, XP is the best OS for the people I build computers for and 2003 is the best OS for my Domain Controller.
Oh and before anyone goes "yeah but.." don't try to compare the OS' either, as each are designed for a diffirent role (even if we don't use them that way).

BoP, some people host their own images aas oppsed to attaching them, thats what causes the diffirent sizes.
Anyway, for a PYDT there is an awful lot of text and lack of pictures!

Erm my Linux comment was a joke although Red Hat with a kde and bluecurve is almost there. Very easy to install and do basic tasks however obveously you have a compatability problem.
Dontassume the cos XP is a patched version of 2k its better. Just look at WinME.
putty_thing
02-24-2004, 06:54 PM
or ximian..
i use win2k on the desktop, and linux on the servers - as people have said, linux isn't ready for the desktop.
i also don't really consider xp an upgrade to 2k (what more does it do?), and don't particularaly like 2k3 on the servers, but then i didn't really like 2000 either (terminal services is good though). anyway, linux/samba are coming on leaps and bounds, so its only going to get better for linux enabled people ;)
of course, it doesn't matter what you use - just use what you're most efficient/productive with - if you can't figure out howto do something on an os, then you arn't going to be as productive with it. the same thing applies if it takes you a week to reinstall it.
