Howdie y'all. Came across a raher odd problem the other day when i installed C&C Generals onto my desktop computer. The instal went fine, and i have the latest DirectX. The game then loaded fine and i went into the main menu. However, the moment i moved my mouse the whole computer crashed. I tried re-installing the game but to no avail. Thinking it might be the game, i installed it on 2 of my mates computers and it worked fine...odd i thought.

Seeing as how i'm almost completely computer iliterate i can't think of what might be wrong with the PC. Are there any brain boxs out there who might be able to help me with this problem?

Much thanks
D

likely a graphics card problem, mebbe ram, or for that matter, motherboard chipset drivers.

perhaps it ran file til it had to do interrupts for the mouse(?) [i can't say for sure, but i've seen the same thing happen before]

thats very wierd i've never had any problems with my C&C and mice, what spec machine do u have?

The machine is a P4 2.4Ghz with 1Gb of RAM running WinXP. The grpahics card is a Sapphire Radeon 9600PRO (128mb).

I have an inckling it might be the motherboard, but i'm hoping it's not.

tbh its a problem i have heard about a lot but its never one that is easy to sort. First spend a few minutes on Google, it normally has the answer. if not like putty_thing says make sure _every_ driver is update, motherboard and GFX. then give it another go. Good luck.

Not if its only in one game.

Thats a possibilitiy, C&C will make your card work as hard as it can, the game is only contraned by your system spec, there is no max prop or unit limit, nor is there a absoulte partical count, it will just keep using up ram and system res :) whilst this makes the game very flexible it tends to kill anything that can't keep up.

Another thing to concder is the mouse drivers them self, XP comes with Intellipoint 3 I belive. Intellipoint 4 is out, use them, Intellipoint 5 also out but are the worst drivers around ever, they remove functionalily for a start (Intellipoint 5 disables button 4 and 5 in games... and various nasty things.)

Other than that, I can only suggest what has already been said.

sounds like an irq conflict to me,

Drazhar

irq conflict in xp? I thought that was impossible, and also it thought that its really hard to change irq nums in xp

is it a usb mouse or ps2, if its usb try updating the usb drivers for your mobo.

What mobo and chipset is it btw?

IRQ cannot occure on NT5+ (well they do, but they get resolved automaticly) If it was a problem with the drivers being plug and play then you should have got the old IRQ_NOT_GREATER_THAN_OR_LESS_THAN error, which is a nasty nasty blue screen of death, this is as close to a IRQ conflict as NT5 has :) but is easy to fix, just uninstall then unplug the last bit of hardware that casued it, most common offenders are ADSL external modems and sound cards (interal and external), but there is no reason any plug and play device can't cause this error, inculding mouses - do you get this error at all? if so that'll be your problem :)

If not try updating all your drivers as suggested already, that normaly fixes little things like that.

Cool, cheers. I don't have a conlficting USB thing in my Device Manager, but i've got no idea what it's for. The mouse can either be Ps2 or USB...it's a mircrosoft laser thingy, so i will go in search of some drivers for it.
