ET Awareness thread...

In preperation for the next LAN I thought I would start an ET awareness thread.

Basically ET (Enemy Territory) is a freebie dogs bollocks game originally planned to be released as an add on for RTCW (Return to castle Wolfenstein).

It is a class based team game and has become extremely popular very quickly.

The standalone game is around 260mb in size and does NOT require that you own or have installed any version of RTCW.

ET is multiplayer only.

The game is best played in campaign mode normally over 3 maps. During the campaign your player gains XP points. As you gain XP points you gain both promotion and extra abilities. The emphasis is placed firmly on the team and is not for the deathmatchers. Reading of the manual is firmly recommended but the actual game is not that hard to pick up. Some maps appear confusing at first but once you have figured out the objectives it becomes a lot easier.

I do ask you (people reading this) that you play the game before coming to the LAN, for my sanitiy, I get into ET like I get into no other game, and I will start throwing things at you if you do things wrong or otherwise get in my way :) just ask Jynx.

i'm up for playing we did have some fun with it at tmg.spcc as it was just out then and the first time many came across it but i'm always up for a game of most things and i am downloading it ..... now!

Today I will discuss the "Covert ops" class. The class could be considered the consumate under achiever yet that does prevent him being one of the most popular choices. That said put a "Covert ops" class in the right hands and you have a winner.

If you remember nothing remember these tips with regards to the "Covert ops"

Disguise: The covert ops is able to steal the uniform of a dead soldier. When in disguise he is also able to open doors the previously had been denied to him... Very good tip... Remember this on the beach ramp and if one of the fools come down to the beach nab his uniform and help your mates get in via the side door.

Det pack: My man carries a Det pack this is excellent for quick destruction of objectives and also can be used in a trap scenario. Particularly usefull on the beach map for destroying the ramp very quickly.

Few other things with regards to Coverts.

Sniping, The covert can use either of two rifles to do sniping, but one is more or less usless as its not designed for 1 hit killing. If you intend to snipe then ALWAYS us the grand, as a second headshot will garantee a kill (note, everyone wears a helmet making them immue to the first headshot, unless you're a bloody good shot, no lame CS WMing here), the seond rifle the FG, is a good rifle if you intend to draw attension away from someone or something, although this tatic is more of an advanced skill. The sten, is strictly a under cover weapon, usless in a tit for tat firefight and no zoom for sniping.

Assasinasion, The covert gains a bonse in knife kills from behide (and at level 4 a stab from behide is instant kill), this is an advanced skill that should only be used when under cover using a unifrom.

Mine Detection, The covert has a pair of bonoclears that they can use to spot (not defuse) mines, the is one of the most important jobs of a Covert, next to stealing Unifroms and opnering doors for team mates.

Smoke Grenade, The covert has a smoke grenade that he may use whenever his engery meter is at max, this grenade fills a large area with dence black smoke which cannot be seen trough, However it takes some skill and more practive to use it effectivly :)

Welshbloke has already explained the Det pack and the disguise.

Now for something to avoid!

Feild Ops, Enermy field ops have the ability to detect coverts ops, and at level 4 this detection is INSTANT, they just have to look at you. so stay away from anyone with am ammo symobl on the sleeves.

As Welshbloke says, the covert is one of the more complex classes, highly skilled, and very cool, and is picked by many noobs for those reasons, which are unfortunatly all the wrong reasons to pick them for. A team should never had more than 2 coverts at most, and in almost all cases 1 is enough. Dispite me mensioning sniping the covert is NOT A SNIPER, this is not its primary role, this isn't CS, everyone has infnite lifes, making sniping almost unless, expect in defence and a few rare occations.

If you absoulaty have to be a covert then for the love of god keep asking where you need to be and what you need to do, the covert tends to have a lot of responsiblities and little time in which to do them. this class is easiely the most skilled class, and many people cannot use it correct. - I am a very skilled Medic/Enginneer/Feild Op I cannot use Coverts to save my life (or the lives of my teams mates) so I stick to what I'm good at - please do the same ;)

Thanks Shadow I was gonna go over some more points but ran out of time. I have to say even though I have now played over 300 maps (I discovered my end of game screenshot collection) I am still discovering things like the Field ops ability to discover the Covert op.

I like yourself rarely go Covert ops. I do suprisingly like playing as field ops which makes the above point even more embarassing.

This is both a complex and simple game but definately rewards those who try to get to grips with its mechanics.

:D Shock horror I am still playing the U2 XMP pack and you know what it aint as bad as some folk have painted it. Still only a minor diversion from the real game at hand and nope it aint Sim City 4 or RRT3 (no dissing to these games but I just do not have enough hours in a day for these time suckers).

2. No planes or other silly things, but there is the problem of MINES.

Let me explain.

An engineer can place down mines, you know the ones you stand on and go bang? Well anyway, these are marked using a little flag, red for axis blue for allied. I spoke previouly about how coverts can spot these.

The problem, These mines aren't smart mines, they are just explovies in the ground that go bang when ANYTHING/ONE stands on them. Sooo.. When you see a flag, it is NOT a POWER UP, and ET has no CAPTURE THE FLAG mode, so NEVER walk on a little flag, no matter its colour - unless your an engineer defusing it...

Noobs seems to think ET is Mario 3D or something and collecting as many flags as possible will result in a super bounes or something... IT DOESN'T! STAY AWAY FROM THE MINES! go it? just to be sure. MINES = BAD, like BAD as in DEAD.

Give me an educated ET player any day. One of the best things about LANs is that you are a Noob for the shortest time.

As for ET I can't play it due to it crashing my computer within a few minutes of starting it, hard locks... It looked alright, especially for a free game, but a little DoD-y for my tastes. Some clever ideas seemed to be included and I've no doubt that it would be a good game to watch and play at a high level. I'd like to see a SK quality teamwork team playing a game of this, I think the medic would become an invaluable tactical weapon in a class match.

me, frog and duckandcover from PlanB all play et and it is installed on all the PlanB machines. We will have one of our 2.4ghz p4 linux servers (prob the one not running bf1942/dc) running a 6map campaing and should handle 32players no problems. It would be nice if we could timetable some et and maybe even a tourny?

We do run ET pro, it seems pretty much standard on online servers however i havent had a chance to set up any of the features realy.

If u have a server config or a list of settings you would like to see please email them, as sadly our ET server doesnt get used much at other lans so we didnt quite get round to testing the config etc.

But yeah, tourny sounds good.. just 3 maps? or perhaps we could split it and have each of the stock 3map campaings on fri/sat or whatever..

Gump, Tis a shame, its a great game. I don't actually have a config script 'cus I don't run a server my self :( but I know all the vote commands, I'll either do it just like that or find the command names - I'll work something out :)

hopuflly team based, but that would have to be 5v5, maybe 4v4 at a pinch, if not we'll do it like with BF, in which case points would be worked out based on doing your job - Is the medic healing people? Is the covert spoting mines and providing alt routes? Is the solly killing everything that moves? etc...

I haven't played ET for a while my self, playing NS, but I have no doubt it wont take me long to get back into the swing :D Its the only game I am really good at (other than TA - but thats a diffirent story)

I remeber first playing with Jynx... He was uber shit, now tho, hes quite good and makes a mean engi. :D

I think you are confused there Tubs, being a good medic doesn't mean you can die lots, it means you heal people... ;)

Problem is medic is the most common class becuase they can heal them self, being a good medic is a little difficult and more so when the team already has a whole bunch of DMing medics, What is really needed is skilled Coverts and Solly (Skilled Engis are a gibbon), A half decent field op wouldn't go a miss either, medics and sollies go through ammo like its candy - that airtstrike is handy too :) So bascily we need skilled everything :P

I can Medic very well - Managing to Kill them Heal you. I can Engi alright - I'm a git with rifle grenades. I can't solly - Fire rate is to slow, I need to work on my acc. I can covert but I'm more of the snipeing/mine spotting type which is only needed on one level and I can Field Op, just about but I would prefer not to :D

Jynx, I would imagein the intrest would be quite hight we managed to pull enough players togother last time for some good games, if we make it more apprent that we might do a torney it would spark more intrest.

That said I have not played ET for ages due to a rather nasty addiction to Brecourt without snipers in Call of duty. I am told that other maps exist but slowly slowy catchy monkey... (1 month so far lol)

ive managed to ave a play with tht bot program it is (link listed in this thread) quite good however it is limited to the following.

The bots only spawn as engineers
The map is on the Oasis map with the older city
the bots can get confused and just leap about
and u seem to die VERY quickly.. this could be tht i not very good @ the game but once the enemy bot c's you it can be over VERY quickly..

PS im not a pikey either :)... looking into broadband as well

As for the bots, earily stages I guess, shouldn't take too long before they get good, assuming someone is working on them. As they are in there current state I don't think its playable really. And I hate bots not losing targeting if you move behide something, oh and bots that have 100% acc... just hurts :)

BoP, sone simple fact, its still on topic. just. Must say I haven't played ET in a while, me and Jynx joined a "casual" clan that lasted a day, I managed to play 2 games and becuase I had been playing NS my skills were dire, though after a few hours online I Remebered a few things :)

But yeah, for as long as this thread and any other thread stay on topic it'll remain open, you decide if it dies. preferbly topics would just fade away as people make new threads. But ET is still popular and will remain so for sometime - hopfully.

Due to this threads popularity I have decided something. I will be holding an ET tutorial and fun game before the LAN. Basically just a 15 minute section before the game starts on what the classes are ect and then how the game is won/lost. Then after that a game to get in the spirt. If you would be interested in this then post and say any nights you cant make as a rule.
