right when was the last time you actually used the capslock key for anything other than typing "OMG 1 4/\/\ T3H 1773!!!!11111ONE"?

after just having had a look at page 11 of the pc specs thread i suddenly remembered an article i read about a site. I dont know where the article is now but the site was http://anticapslock.com/ and i had to agree that i dont think ive ever had a legitimate use for the capslock key and when i asked around the answers from everyone i asked went along the lines of "er a very long time ago" to "never".

so im getting even more curious now has anyone here ever had a legitimate use for the capslock button and used it or should it be burnt with very hot burny things

Everyday

I work on computer system in NHS hospitals, they use systems called PAS (Patient Administration Systems) these are very old applications, nice green on black screens, in them all data must be entered in CAPS, however the application isn't powerful/clever enough to realise if you are in CAPS or not, so you have to either hold shitft down for everything you type or use CAPS lock when using the app.

Other than for work? Never.

Same here, we use it on map symbols, and call commands to get satalite data, but thats about it. Oh and the footer of my CV i used it for my contact details, till i decided that that was silly.

The most useless one is Pause/Break, but its now being used for pause in DOW

Legacy systems and Legacy systems users are the only folk who even know what caps lock is. Even though we upgraded our system 12 months ago I still need to remind then they need not type in capitals anymore.

Scroll lock would get my vote and I have never used that but have been pissed off with it when it was accidentally enabled on a laptop and nobody could remember the fifteen key combo to switch it off.

The pause button is used in numberous games the most fun was using it on Half Life game servers with PAUSE enabled... or was that NOT the most fun...

All the caps locks were produced using the shift key and no caps locks were used in the production of this post.

Take away the numpad enter and I will have to kill you, moving numlock up and sticking another key in its place would make me happy

I use the numpad as my controls for most games.

i very rarely use the numbers along the top of the keyboard at all i find it much more comfortable and natural to use the num pad

i find that if im typing puurely numbers like an ip address then the numpad is the best but if im just typing (eg programming and i need a number the top row numbers are more usefull
i still dont think ive found out what scroll lock does and ive probably used it less than capslock
break is usefull as you can get the post screen to halt with something and break iirc probably ctrl or alt

when you start to use a computer in the office Num lock comes into its own. Cannot describe how annoying it is stabbing at the num buttons to discover you have not enabled numlock...

Numlock - couldn't be without it
Capslock - pile of pooh really don't need it
Scrolllock - what the hell does it actually do other than turn on and off the third light??

Scroll lock is something left from DOS that, surprisingly.....looked the scroll bar!!!

Used to work on this like the original Word Perfect :)

Now its primary role is to annoy Lappies users who have activated it but have no idea how to disable due to a five finger shuffle exercise.
