This might be a bit old hat but Overclockers is selling an 8ms 17" DVI TFT

The brightness is to low for a decent TFT, the contrast is to low also, it doesn't state the vertical hz vs the hoz hz, so the 8ms could be distored somewhat, also it doesn't have a very good max res.
Other than that, nice monitor, but plenty better out there.

i'm quietly impressed with novatech's current 17" TFT 16ms response ain't bad

Wheres Pies when you need to explain why such a fast tft will be crap!
tuBBymAN
01-20-2005, 10:56 PM
i was under the obviously misguided impression that the faster the better was the rule that applied in these cases
eaterofpies
01-23-2005, 01:29 PM
it could be good but a load of the really fast ones have panels can only display 260,000 or so colours (or something like that) and achieve all the other colours by quickly swapping 2 of those colours so according to a site that had an article about this if its one of the 260000 colours you get your 8 ms but otherwise you dont.
I just got my 16 ms screen and i was dubious as ive been a crt fan for a long time and i can honestly say i dont notice anything funky in games such as Q3, UT2004, DOW etc. the only downside with good tfts is you really have to play at a multiple of the screens actual res so 1600x1200 or 800x600 for me otherwise it will look a bit odd.
it might be worth noting that the panels arent usually from the better manufacturers in the fast / cheap tfts so you might ger more pixels that get stuck etc

Right this should be the best place to post this question then.
I want a cheap TFT screen, which would be the best? Considering I'm going to be gaming etc, and at what price?
Cheers :)

from what i understand from previous incarnations of this very thread the samsungs are the best or if not something with a samsung panel in it much like the dell try ebuyer they have a huge range of TFT's

Hmm I did assume it was a big subject, nevertheless times have changed, and that could affect the results. Either way, cheers man, I'll look out for a good deal :)

no probs oh and don't forget novatech.co.uk their 17" one seemed pretty good but the better range and prices will be at ebuyer however overclockers is oftern worth a look sometimes they do TFT's in "this week only" section

don't forget novatech.co.uk
Bad experiences with them. Although then again I've never brought anything from Ebuyer, only Micro Direct (www.microdirect.co.uk), and at that, was only a mouse and GFX card. Good service nevertheless.
I'm poping up to Manchester soon, so I can check out Europes Largest Computer Fair "Similar to the one in Southampton at the last Sunday of the month i.e. This Sunday" so I'll check their prices as well, it's on every Saturday "For more details" (http://www.google.com) . You never know what good deals you can get, and better yet. You can haggle =) I'm going sometime in Febuary once I got rid of this PC, so I'll reply with a reccomendation.. then again it's VERY far away from here.

putty_thing uses a 20" Dell, I use a 20" Dell, addz uses 2x 15" Dells.
Dell's TFT's are rock solid.

And like pies said, cheap and tft shouldn't go together.

01-25-2005, 01:46 PM
lol, The only problem with Dell is they are not cheap, but that is for the reason mensioned above, Dell TFT's are a good build and very reliable which doesn't come cheap.
In the world of TFT's you do actually pay for what you get (just a shame ALL the prices are infalted, cheap or expensive)

Im in the same boat - very tempted on this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_This_Week_Only_25.html
Read alot of good things in the forums.
Seems to have the same brightness as the dells (jims/steves) and a 500:1 contrast ratio.
Thoughts? Ive got till thursday to make my mind up :)

daish i know its not as big but the 17" at dell is down to ?197 its a bargin :D
SGT_Snacks
01-25-2005, 06:07 PM
Well considering Dell seem to have a good reputation with people, and the monitors are said to be good, ?197 is an amazing price. Probably not liable to be that price for long though. I would get a CRT, but I'm fed up of lugging it to LANs, and is an uncontrollable heating solution for the Winter, which makes it a bugger for the summer. Plus I also need the space TFT Screens offer. So all-in-all Dell seem to be, at the moment, the good choice =) Thanks for the advice guys, and happy Winter-een-mas

Daish - If http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acata...ek_Only_25.html is the monitro you want, check out http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?productID=8198, its on offer atm for ?305.49! ?23 cheaper!

Heh i didnt think to look else where. Presumed ocuk would be cheapest as its on offer. not really interested in the dell - i dunno i thought this one was ok. Dell do a 19" but i dont know why they are cheaper than the rivals. And when you compare spec to spec the viewsonic seems better (mainly due to DVI and 16ms vs 12ms) for only ?50
Also do you know how long their special offers last? Is it changed daily or weekly?

Dell is cheaper than the rival becuase of corperate buying power, simple facts and figures, they can build and buy in bulk and still provide support and warranty.
Dell rule, for anything but Games Machines.

01-26-2005, 02:56 AM
Well i went for it from micro direct as it was a great price and i didnt know when the offer expired. Ive read nothing but excellant reviews on this tft but ill give u guys my own review once i recieve it and let you know what i think. Still cant believe i parted with ?310 .....

Ouch, always worth finding an online commuinty to ask about stuff like that as so many of these things are easy to do yourself.

Clutch is fairly easy with the right tools, engine hoist, possibly airgun - just split the gearbox off and its right there..
And tubby, if you stopped drag racing, your clutch would last longer!

Na, many companys wont ship to any other address other than the billing address the first time around, becuase by validating your code, they validate your address, so in furture if its sent to another address that turns out to be hooky, they can get you at your main addr.
And of course if your first addr is hooky, the card check should show that and they simply wont send it.
Standard practice these days
