Yeah I agree Blackstar, its not looking good.

i woulddve prefered them to make graphics which are more suited to helping actual gameplay, instead of just making games which look like the old 3dmark demos....

I'd welcome the idea of Quake 4, if the multiplayer's any better than the letdown Doom 3 was.

Still, if they're making a SP as good as Q2 and a Multiplayer as good as Q3, why not call it Q5 :P

Yeah lets hope the MP is so so so much better! Quake and Doom games always used to just about, if not the biggest online games (well FPS style)

I know many of you think im... a bit weird? that I play FPS with just about no graphics on, but those that have tried it have said its improved their results, i think this is because u dont get disctracted by lighting etc.

However following from what Gring said,

If I want graphics I can go watch a film, however I play games for the gameplay, I think some developers need to remember that graphics should improve an already great game, not try to blind you from thinking an ok game is good.

graphics should improve an already great game, not try to blind you from thinking an ok game is good. See HL1 and HL2, great gameplay which is only improved by the (at the time of each release) great graphics

Ill agree with you on HL1, i think that was amazing.

However i wouldnt say the same about HL2, yes very good, but not as groundbreaking, maybe there was just to much hype around the game that it would have been impossible to be as good as everyone said?

I mean the final section, although a nice new idea (takin away ur weaps etc) after 5-10mins or throwing men across the room (which was fun at 1st) it got a bit boring and was a bit of a disapointment. When i completed the game I actually remember saying, "what?! is that it" it just didnt feel like a good ending, seemed more like they thought. Hell we can make more ? here, lets just finish this off and get moving on another!

However I am hard to please and have found very few games over the last 2-3yrs which have made me sit back and think wow that was good. Maybe im just expecting to much to soon? :D

Hence PS1 games had FMV Movies to cover up a crap game.

I have to say I have killed few folks in CSS who have turned off the shadows not realising that they are giving their position away. Although I do agree it should improve gameplay and that is an example I guess when it was actually usefull rather than just eye candy.

Again though cs:s just isn't as good as the original, its too clumpy and all the cool little bugs and quriks that make me love cs so much aren't there. imo games just arent hardcore anymore and I can't think of anything thats up and coming that will make me change my mind :(

The ending to HL2 was rubbish indeed BobNT, but that was to do with the rubbish way Valve devved the game. As for games not being hardcore anymore, with the money moving to the consoles I think we will find there being fewer and fewer 'proper' PC games. Gaming is increasingly becoming mainstream and imho dull. Yes good games will still be made, but innovation is stifled not least due to the massive amounts of cash invested in just making the game itself.

I would disagree with your comment about CSS not being as good but that is really another argument and is subjective.

I would agree that with the specifications of the new wave of consoles the PC and Console gap performance wise is decreasing coupled with new TV mediums and we have serious competition and lets face it hard core does not pay the bills.

Brothers in Arms shows that good games can still be made that both appeal to the console and PC gamer yet it also demonstrates the bad side at the same time. The MP game of BIA is actually rather good but unfortunately it is so console biased as to potentially ruin the game. For example no dedicated server support a crap server browser and helluva big fonts demonstate the console focus more than anything else in this game.

My only hope is that the console folks get more sophisticated and begin expecting more.

When i completed the game I actually remember saying, "what?! is that it" it just didnt feel like a good ending, seemed more like they thought. Hell we can make more ? here, lets just finish this off and get moving on another!

I said the exact same thing, HL2 compared to HL1 was rather poo, it was no where near as long, the end boss was easy as hell, the last level was a joke, fun for sure, but that wore off quick, They covered the lack of story with massive seconeds of buggies and airboats, again cool but used in excess, after the boat or buggy I was happy to get off them, I didn't get the feeling I was hopeing of "aww, man, let me get back in the buggy" like I did with the trains in HL1, where I contsantly ensure I have my train with me at all times - when it crashed into the silo i was like.. "NnooooO! MY train!!" It upset me... I still have phyropy for it.

There was also so little back story in HL2 it sucked. they basicly went, people like the crowbar "Hey Gordan, have your trusty crowbar"... bah.

Gfx where very nice, the new patch that adds HDL will be good, but even a gold plated polished turd, is still a turd.

as for D3.. Zzzzz.

</rant> Back to World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Dungeon Seige II and Dragonshard - There isn't enough hours in the day!!! :( :(

If / when they make HL3 i hope they make a really good job of it. I wonder if HL2 would have been rated so highly if HL1 hadnt come along first. I think a few people/writers/reviewers etc thought, "hmmm hl1 was so gd so im sure HL2 will be gr8, even if its not, its a HL game so ill give it a gd score, dont want to upset any1". Well those are my thoughts :)

Battlefield 2? I'm hoping that will be good but otherwise i share your malaise most LANS these days its UT2004 the odd CS game at the smaller ones and maybe some other big mp games of COD but thats it nothing inspiring

UT 2004 is good because of it's Gameplay, the Graphics aren't HL2 impressive, but it's a damn good game :)

Ut2k4 can have amazing graphics you just gotta have a machine that most would kill for!

I got 2 6600GTs on PCI Express. It runs the game perfectly at max settings. It's not any Sourse Engine impressive, but in my opinion, it passes. Plus the gameplay is awesome

If you turn all the eye candy on, you get much worse at playing. Trust me, I'm a complete convert, I used to think it was bs the setting lloyd has his q3a at. But then I tried it and I got about 25% better almost instantly which isn't so bad. So I couldn't care less if a mplayer game looks no better than Q2 anymore, because I'll only turn all the graphics down anyway...

tuBBymAN
05-13-2005, 11:24 AM
hmmm kinda defeats the object of them working to make them more impressive

Wedgeh

I still want uber sexy single player games :) But take for example UT200(6) which runs on the supposedly amazing UT3 engine. I might allow myself to enjoy the graphics vs the bots, but since I don't want to get my ass handed to me by humans with the eye candy turned off, I'll have to do the same myself...

Interesting topic.. i dont play as much as used too due to work etc & flying about on my new bike :D :D :D .

It is a shame that games dont have as much gameplay appeal as a few years ago, games like Doom warcraft 1 & 2 CnC HL1 series etc etc were all cracking becasue they were designed to run decently on average equipment that is what made them sooooo popular.

the most recent games that have got back the playability of the above classics is DoW Warcraft 3 & UT2004 all of which can be made to look stunning but don't rely on that to make the game.

Developers need to stop chasing pixel & detail levels in their games which half of us can't achieve on the machines we have without upgrading every few months. In my opinon having a game that plays really well is better than one that looks alot better but plays like cr*p.

Yeah I am with Wedge on this. The only setting I ahve maxed is the res, the rest are normally turned down. On ET for example turning stuff liek the grass of makes playing the game so much easier.

Wow some1 agreed with me :D lol. Trust me guys, I know people love having everything turned on, but the less there is to distract ur eye, the easier it is for u to concentrate on wat really matters.... FRAGS :D muwahahwa :)

If u dont believe me just try it and let me know, if it doesnt work you can always turn them back on. I guarantee u will get at least 5-10% better.

Guarantee will not be honoured if ur a newb who cant play becos thats not my fault. I will not be held responsible for you getting ur ass handed to u game after game until u learn to play ;)

I turned settings down to lowest back when I was playing Halo PC Passionatly. It got me better at it. Things ran smooth etc.

I've just turned all the detail on CS:S (yes I'm back playing cs again) down to low, it agained me about +10-15fps (which makes maps like de_inferno and de_port playable) and also makes people a little easier to see...plus who wants shadows on their guns...no one care...you never look at them!!!

/me partly converted...well as far as cs is concerned!
