(Why didn't anyone start a thread on this?)
I'm pretty impressed with the demo, the graphics are good (although not running on anything pre gf5 is a crime) and it's enjoyable for all the same reasons as 1942, BUT, without most of the annoyances.
The squads functionality has to be the best new bit for me, makes getting into the game so much faster.
Thoughts?

well u would know pete being on the beta testing proggy, i have only just downloaded the demo will post further thoughts later
Yeah I must say I like it. After playing BF:V and later versions of DC I must admit I thought the whole idea had gone to pot but they went back and sorted the basics and have made a cracking game.
Roll on full version this is definately one for the LAN :D

I think the best way to describe it is its back to basics battlefield, with some decent hardware.

I have been off the last couple of days and to my missus chagrin I have given the demo a good old pasting.
Definate improvements especially on balance. The game does not feel dominated by Aircraft and the footslogger now gets some action. Admittedly it was a mod last time (DC) that I felt was most unbalanced the original being a good bit of fun.
The Squad control is excellent and is by far the best feature. The jury is still out on the commander in my opinion but a step in the right direction. Started to get some good games in once you got a squad going but I did find that it was common for their to be no commander which kinda stiffles any squad chinanigans.
I have a low spec card (9500Pro) but as Bobnt mentioned in another thread eye candy is not the main goal of a FPS nut. I can say I played without any visible graphical issues although I am sure it looks nice in 2040x1280. I can confirm that I can still kill people who play with all the bells and whistles on.
Will be nice to see the other 11 maps. Hopefully the ranking and persistent world thingy will not turn the servers into maps with people only concerned for placements because I am sure no matter how biased the scoring is to objectives and teamwork killing folk is easier and will always cause you to climb the ladders with only a modicum of effort.
The biggest acolade I can give is that I will purchase this puppy and it is a definate must have for any FPS nut and should be in your cupboard alongside Quake, HL and UT.

Well I can say I wasnt a fan of the first Battlefield, not sure why, it just didnt feel right. Maybe its because I think a FPS should be about being on foot (with the exception on Onslaught in UT ;) ), trying to get started playing BF1942 while getting the crap beat outta you by aircraft etc kinda put me off playing it enough to get a good impression.
Guess the only way to tell is to grab a copy of the demo and see how I get on :)

Welshbloke curses his bad Caps memory module.
Any tips on the commander role would be appreciated. I am getting silghtly miffed now at the number of times I play without one. I cannot find any help guides with the demo on the commanders capability so if you have any tips especially how to use the commander i.e. wot buttons to press appreciated.

I agree with BobNT about the original BF as i just really couldnt get into it. When you were on foot you moved too slowly to do anything worth while and the game was just too slow.
In BF2 We had a fairly awesom firefight last night when 2 entire teams were focused on 1 area which would have gone a lot better if we had a commander that was thinking or a lot worse if theirs was thinking. With helicopters / aircraft taking out infantry but the infantry still holding their own because of the land based missile turrets that lock on to things or just the usual anti armor weapons that seemed to work. It actually seemed like it was worth while running around as infantry and not just trying to get some form of vehicle as soon as you spawn.

commander tips:
- Hide yourself away as commander, its a full time job dont try and be a soldier too!
- Caps lock is where you control ur squads
- You can only control squads not players doing their own thing so encourage people join squads
- Always treat your squads like gold, if they need orders give them some, theres nothing worse as a squad commander when ur troops are asking what to do next and u cant give them an order.
- Dont be conservative with ur "powers" ie supply drops, artillery, auv. esp supply drops, if u command a squad to attack a position supply creates can be a godsend!
- remember ur "powers" can be destroyed by the enemy, if they go down send a squad to fix them. a classic is the american artillery on the beach, this can be destroyed with ease so ensure u stay on top of it.
thats all i can think of for now, feel free to add to it guys!

I like BF2, but still have the same gripe I did with the first, unlike say in Quake where you can stick the redical over your target, click fire - hit. in BF you have to aim a few weeks ahead of them and press fire, wait for the cross hairs to indicated a hit then either keep fireing or aim a little left of firday to hit them.
Also, the fact some guy could be laying on the floor - not moving - and you have a massive machine gun pointed at his head from 3 feet away, you can't hit him at all.
Becuase of this I find Anti-Tank the only class I can play - hitting tanks seems to be a little easier, and in an emergancy, fire a rocket near ground fodder seems to kill them.
Other than that, its a good game and I like commander mode - as long as there isn't a 13 year old pip-squeek in command.

I'm liking what I'm seeing! Running well on my new system as well =D But is it me or have the textures been tuned down like they did with 2004 demo?

All comander tips greatly received. It is a shame they could not make it as simple to control as the Squad leader as that seemed a lot more intuitive.

Armed with my "Commander" training manual as written by Ripper I have not lost a battle. Although maybe slightly boring you do get some satisfaction from trying to keep the troops happy.
I have only died twice since elevating myself to the exalted heights of Commander and one of those was an Airstrike I called on to myself in a true "Gung Ho" moment. At least I saved the point but have also made a note not to hide near a control point ;)
Having now experienced the commander mode I can say this; Once the folks get to grips with the commander class this game will get a lot tougher and as a by product making the Mechanic and Specialist more valuable. Calling the spare airstrikes onto the Airfields kept the bloody planes at bay which makes him a top man in my book.

Dont get me wrong, i like the commander mode, but i also like proper footslogging. I mean, being a commander removes alot of the action from the game in my eyes, it turns the game into a RTS, rather than a 1st person shooter, i mean if you get dead, it all goes to pot, so being the commander and getting near a firefight is a bit irresponsable, and i like shooting at stuff myself.
Also there resetting the rankings when the beta ends, so its going to take me ages to get a decent ranking after the launch :)

Should give me a chance to get to play the commander now and not get told a player with a higher rank has taken the job.
Fingers crossed and Play.com come up trumps and delivery me my shiny new copy tomorrow as planned.
